More vocabulary in the new video of Katy Perry!



FIREWORKS= A device consisting of a combination of explosives and combustibles, set off to generate colored lights, smoke, and noise for amusement.

DRIFTING= If something is drifted, it is pushed and moved by things out of its control, usually the power of the sea or the wind.

PAPER THIN= As thin as a sheet of paper.

A HOUSE OF CARDS= A construction you can make by making a pyramid with playing cards. Just one light blow or a touch and it all will crumble down.

CAVING IN= (of a building or cave) Crumbling down, collapsing.

ONE BLOW FROM CAVING IN= The only thing you need to make it cave in is a blow (a blow is when you expel air through your mouth in a focused way).

BURIED= To bury /berɪ/ is to put something inside a hole in the ground and then cover it back with earth. (when people die, they are usually buried; when a dog wants to hide a bone, it buries it in the garden).

SIX FEET UNDER SCREAM= (scream = shout) These are two sentences and it is connected with the previous line and the next line (there's no punctuation, so it may be difficult to see the grammatical structure). This paragraph says: Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under (ground)? (You) scream, but no one seems to hear a thing.

TO HEAR A THING= It is common to use this kind of construction in negative sentences. See these examples:
- I can't hear anything = I can't hear a thing (or: I can't hear a sound)
- I can't say anything = I can't say a word
- I don't understand anything (that) you say = I can't understand a word you say
- I can't sleep at all = I can't sleep a wink (wink= when you close one eye)
- I can't feel anything = I can't feel a thing.
- I can't eat anything more = I can't eat one more bite.
- I can't walk anymore = I can't walk one more step.
CHANCE= Opportunity.

CAUSE= (coll. also spelled: coz, cos, cuz, cus, 'cause) Because

SPARK= A fragment of light or fire. A little bit of energy or fire that can start a big fire or explosion. "There's a spark in you" means that you have inside that little thing you need to start a big personal "explosion", a big change that will make you start acting.

GOTTA= Have to, must.

IGNITE= To set fire to, to cause to burn, to start a fire or explosion.

SHINE= Send out light.

OWN= Possess.
LIKE= (preposition) the same as

THE FOURTH OF JULY= The day the USA celebrates its national day. The main celebration for that day is great fireworks in the sky (in that respect, it's the equivalent of Guy Fawkes Day in the UK).

'EM= (coll.) Them.

WORTH= Valuable.
Show them what you're worth= show them how valuable/important you are.

GO= (coll.) Say.
- The cat goes meow and the cow goes moo.
- She saw me and she went, "oh, hello, why are you here?"


BURST= Come out as in an explosion.

A WASTE OF SPACE= If something is a waste of space, it is useless and it shouldn't be there, because we can make room for more important things.

REPLACED= Substituted.

IF YOU ONLY= We use "if" with "only" (+ past tense) to express a wish. It's equivalent to the construction WISH + past tense. Both constructions use the unreal past but they're talking about the present.
- If I could only be taller = I wish I could be taller (= I want to be taller)
- If only you didn't lie so much = I wish you didn't lie so much
- If only that was true = I wish that were true
- If he could only understand = I wish he could understand

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS= What possibilities are there in the future waiting for you.

HURRICANE= A terrible storm with an extremely strong wind.

RAINBOW= A bow (arch) of colours you can sometimes see in the sky after the rain.

YOU'RE REASON WHY...= You are THE reason why that happens, you are causing it to happen or stopping it from happening (so you are responsible). That means that you can also change the situation if you want.

A LIGHTNING BOLT= (or simply LIGHTNING) discharges of electricity you can see in a storm. The sound you hear from a lightning is called a THUNDER.

BLOW= Explode.

WHEN IT'S TIME= When the right moment arrives.

LET IT THROUGH= Let it go out
